Support & FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions procurement teams and investigators actually ask us, grouped by what they are trying to decide.

Why choose us?

Why should I choose Kinesense?

If your requirement ends in a report served on the defence rather than a dashboard, you should choose us:

  • Widest video format support: a shop's DVR export, a neighbour's phone, body-worn video, a covert deployment. Kinesense is built to take material from anywhere.
  • Analytics you can trust: a layered analytics toolkit designed to work on real police video, deployable on CPU and GPU, case objective dependent.
  • Reporting: all the tools and features you need to take raw video to court-ready reports, without requiring other software.
Is Kinesense a BriefCam alternative?

Yes, for investigations. Both accelerate video review, but they are built for different end points. Analytics platforms are optimised for large camera estates and operational dashboards; Kinesense is optimised for the exhibit: ingest of proprietary DVR formats, documented clarification, redaction, disclosure logs and an audit trail that goes to court. If your requirement ends in a report served on the defence rather than a dashboard, evaluate us.

Does Kinesense offer image and video enhancement tools?

Enhancement tools are strong at the forensic science of a single clip or frame. That is one step in the workflow. Kinesense covers the whole of it: triaging hundreds of hours to find the clip, clarifying it, redacting third parties, sequencing the storyboard, generating the disclosure report, and doing live work in RECON where the operation is still running. We have different modules depending on your role, but the whole case fits in the platform.

Our analytics approach

Are your analytics a black box?

No. Tried-and-tested classical computer vision algorithms underpin our analysis, with deep learning layered on top for attribute recognition. This provides investigators with information about what was detected, which processing layer identified it, and where it occurred in the footage, not simply an unexplained confidence score.

What can you search by?

We focus on searching for people and vehicles, as our customers are predominantly interested in mapping suspect, victim and witness movements. There are 16 search attributes in total:

  • People (10): gender, age range, hair length, carrying items, hat, glasses, sleeve length, lower body clothing length, upper body colour and lower body colour.
  • Vehicles (2): vehicle type and vehicle colour.
  • Used in tandem (4): licence plate and OCR, face detection, direction of movement, and zone.
  • If there is something else you want to search by, just ask: we do custom developments too.
What was your deep learning trained on?

Footage typical of police work: night-time, low frame rate, heavy compression, awkward camera angles, rain on the lens. Models trained largely on clean internet imagery degrade on exactly the material investigations produce. Our datasets were not scraped from the internet, and were created with privacy protection methods in place.

Does it work on low frame rate and low resolution video?

Kinesense's motion detection algorithm works down to 2fps, which is rare in the industry. That forms the basis for our more in-depth attribute algorithms, where resolution matters more, but its impact varies significantly by attribute type. Vehicle attributes (type and colour) are the most resilient: they can generally still be read when the vehicle is very small in frame, as little as ~12 pixels wide, since overall shape and colour remain identifiable at low resolution. Person-level attributes like hat and glasses are the most affected, since they depend on fine detail around the head that blurs first as a subject gets smaller in frame. As a rule of thumb, if a person is at least ~35 pixels wide, the full set of person attributes should perform reliably.

Footage, formats and cameras

What video formats can you ingest?

We support a broad range of standard and proprietary formats (proprietary DVR/CCTV exports, mobile phone video, body-worn and in-vehicle footage, plus all the standard container and codec families) without needing the manufacturer's original player. As a general rule, anything playable in Windows Media Player, VLC or FFmpeg is supported.

  • Including but not limited to: .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .wmv, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .mp4, .vob, .xba, .h264, .asf, .sdr2, .sec, .raw, .dav, .rms, .csx, .264, .ts and .mts.
  • Built-in transcoding integrations for specialist recorder devices, including Timespace x200/x300/x400, Ovation Afterburner, Ovation Flashback 2/3, Covidence Oculus, Viola H264, Micron Seorin SDR2 and Acustek.
  • Have a format you need supported? Bring it to us and our in-house engineers will determine whether we can import it. Our engineers have 17 years experience of dealing with difficult formats.
Can you process body-worn and in-vehicle video?

Yes, some of our algorithms only work on static video, but person and vehicle attribute, licence plate and face detection work on non-static video such as body-worn video, dash-cam and hand-held phone footage. Another reason a layered AI analytic approach is the way to go.

Deployment and compute

How long does it take to deploy Kinesense LE?

Install the software on the target machine first: that generates the licence request code you send to us. Turnaround is normally within 24 hours. If you know you'll need a fast turnaround, flag it to us ahead of time so we can be ready to respond immediately rather than working it into the normal queue.

Does it integrate with our existing VMS (Milestone, Genetec)?

Yes, Kinesense LE is compatible with most major VMS platforms. Integration is straightforward.

Do we need GPUs to run Kinesense?

No. Motion detection and object classification run on CPU, on hardware most units already own. GPU is recommended and only needed for the in-depth attribute layers. That choice matters when the budget is a business case, and when the position you are deployed to has limited power. If you have a GPU, use it, and ask us for sizing figures for both.

Can the same hardware do live and post-event work?

Yes. Live triage in RECON and post-event exploitation in Kinesense LE are licensed as modules, not as separately provisioned processing estates. Ask any vendor whether a single GPU can serve both modes: the answer shapes the hardware bill.

On-premise or cloud?

On-premise today, with a cloud-native platform on the roadmap. Kinesense DEAM already runs in an AWS or Azure tenancy or on force hardware, with a full API.

Evidence and court

Does using your tools affect admissibility?

Not when the original is preserved and every processing step is recorded. Our solution comes with a complete disclosure log: what video was imported, by whom and when; how it was watched, with what algorithm, and whether on a frame-by-frame basis; who clarified it and how; and what reports were generated and when.

What training is provided?

New customers start with complimentary, workflow-focused training and onboarding. From there, staff can go on to formal Kinesense training, working-knowledge or certified. We run two programmes:

  • Core: a working-knowledge course covering ingestion, review, search and reporting. Available online or on-site.
  • Advanced: a 2-day or 4-day on-site course ending in a practical test. Successful completion earns a Certificate of Attendance.

Commercials & support

How is Kinesense licensed?

Modularly. Start with the capability the caseload demands and add modules later, rather than buying a suite to reach one feature. We price on an annual subscription model, which means you get access to the latest version.

Who supports us after purchase?

As our solution is sold under a subscription model, you get to tell us what you need and we take it into account. For customers who want next-level support, we offer remote technical assistance that can be instrumental in getting quick results during investigations, whether that is making an image clearer or getting video ingested with synchronised metadata.
