How to customise evidence info fields in the Settings Editor

Add, remove and require the evidence information fields shown in the import wizard, to match your organisation and support ISO 17025 and chain of custody.

Patricia McCabeSoftware Engineer

A few weeks back we talked about adding evidence info to a report and that this information can be customised. Setting the correct fields for your organisation is important for complying with ISO 17025 and chain of custody.

Today we’re going to go through how that is achieved through Kinesense Settings Editor.

Kinesense Settings Editor

The Kinesense Settings Editor window open on its Setting tab.

Kinesense Settings Editor is a small stand alone application that can be accessed through Kinesense, in the options tab, that allows users to customise certain aspects of Kinesense. You need to have admin access on the PC in order to open and use the settings editor. Our advice is not to go playing around with the settings if you aren’t sure what you’re doing but don’t worry, if you break something you can always restore the default settings.

Digital Evidence Info

As we talked about before, digital evidence info can be inserted into Kinesense in the import wizard and then exported to a report. The fields that appear in the wizard can be changed in the Digital Evidence Info tab of the settings editor.

Groups, columns and individual items can be added, removed or edited.

The green plus button for adding a new group at the bottom of the Digital Evidence Info tab.

To add a new group click the green plus at the bottom of the page. You’ll then be presented with a blank new group. There you can add a group and and new columns.

To remove existing groups click the red bin icon beside the group name.

Columns can be added or removed using the “Remove Column” or “Add Column” buttons.

Items can be removed using the little red bin icon beside them or added using the green plus below. All the existing items can be edited, including turning making the field a requirement.

When you’re finished editing the info hit save and the next time you start the import wizard you should see your changes.

And don’t worry, if you make a mess of everything you can always restore the default file!
